GRAHAM BRIGHT
COUNSELLOR, COACH,
CONSULTANT & CELEBRANT

I’m an experienced Counsellor, Coach, Consultant and Celebrant who will walk with you as you explore, breathe, be, become, imagine, grieve, remember and celebrate. I will work with you patiently, empathically, imaginatively, respectfully and without judgement on whatever matters to you. I bring decades of experience in the fields of community work, education and church leadership to consultancy with organisations in those fields. I am also available as a funeral celebrant who will work with families in remembering and celebrating the uniqueness of loved ones.

LEARN MORE ABOUT ME: COUNSELLING

I qualified as a counsellor in 2007. Since then, I have worked in a range of educational settings including schools, colleges and universities. I know the importance of counselling personally - of someone providing an empathic and non-judgmental space to explore and express whatever is going on. If you feel this is something I could offer you, please get in touch.
My approach to counselling is integrative - this means that I draw on a range of different therapeutic approaches in developing ways of working that are bespoke to each individual. However, my work is founded most on the person-centred approach which values empathy, warm acceptance and realness in the process of becoming fully 'us'. I work with children, young people and adults on whatever  issues may bring them to counselling.
I have access to a counselling room in Darlington town centre as well as a garden office at home. I also offer counselling online via Zoom. I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work to their ethical standards. I have a Christian faith and can include prayer in counselling sessions on request - but this will NEVER be forced on you.
I hold a PhD as well as Master's Degrees in Youth and Community Work and Counselling. As I continue to work in other roles, I am able to offer counselling mainly on Mondays (daytime and evening). Alternative times may be possible however by negotiation - please feel free to ask! Please see the 'fees page' for further details.

COACHING AND CONSULTANCY

I also have an interest in coaching and consultancy, particularly with organisations in the areas of education, youth and community work, the voluntary sector and faith. In addition to having taught Youth and Community Work, Childhood and Youth Studies, Education Studies and Counselling, I now teach  Practical Theology and Missiology. I am keen to offer pastoral supervision to church leaders and consultancy to churches, particularly those engaged in pioneering work. I also offer non-managerial supervision to people working in youth and community work and related fields. Please get in touch if you feel I could be of help in any of these ways.

FUNERAL CELEBRANT

The passing of a loved one can of course be one of the most profound human experiences. It often involves deep grief, and a sense of lostness and confusion - amongst so many other feelings.

The funeral service itself is often a chance to say 'goodbye', to say 'thank you' and to celebrate a life and all that it has meant.

As a church leader, I have experience of leading funerals. I always find it one of the greatest honours to be asked to lead funerals and services of remembrance - to honour the life of someone who has passed. I always work with families to craft a service that uniquely remembers and celebrates the life of their loved one. This can, but does not need to, include 'religious elements' - each service is crafted in the way that the person's loved ones would want. I will take time to visit the family and listen carefully to what you say about your loved one in designing a celebration of remembrance that reflects your memories and wishes.

If you would like to explore my involvement in a funeral for a loved one, please feel free to contact me directly, or speak to your funeral director who I will always liaise with closely.

FEES

An hour (50 minutes) of counselling usually costs £45. However, I operate a sliding scale based on income. Where possible, I try to ensure that fees are not a barrier to working with people - so please ask. Fees are paid by bank transfer or cash before the commencement of each session. Missed sessions, or non-attendance with less than 24 hours notice, will usually be charged at full cost.

Fees for Coaching and Consultancy Work are negotiated with individuals and organisations. Please feel free to have a conversation without commitment or embarrassment with me.

In line with many other funeral celebrants in the Darlington area, I charge £140. Again, if this would preclude my involvement in remembering your loved one, please feel free to have a conversation with me to see what might be possible.
